TRAMA:
I due maestri del genere fantastico si sono divisi in parti uguali un omaggio allo scrittore Edgar Allan Poe. Romero ha trasposto La verità sul caso di Mr. Valdemar, nel quale un vecchio sta per morire ma non intende favorire nel testamento la giovane moglie. Lei cerca in tutti i modi di liberarsi di lui, ma senza perdere l'eredità. La scelta di Argento è caduta su Il gatto nero opportunamente riadattato: un fotografo specializzato in raffigurazioni sanguinose e criminali vive con una violinista che possiede un gatto nero. L'animale ossessiona il fotografo che decide di sopprimerlo. Due stili diversi attraversano gli episodi: quello di Romero ha un taglio claustrofobico, quasi televisivo, mentre quello di Argento, di gran lunga migliore, crea suggestioni di taglio visionario che lo rendono inquietante. Particolarmente incisiva l'interpretazione di Harvey Keitel.
