TRAMA:
Nel 1885 Freud è un neurologo all'Ospedale generale di Vienna. Sostenuto dall'eminente dottor Breuer e incoraggisato dalla moglie, Martha Bernays, decide di usare l'ipnosi per curare Cecil Koertner, una nevrotica paralizzata agli arti inferiori dalla morte del proprio padre, e Carl von Schlosser. Quest'ultimo, in preda all'ipnosi, rivela il suo amore incestuoso per la madre e la mania omicida verso suo padre. Sigmund prova una tale repulsione nei suoi confronti che decide di sopendere il trattamento e Carl si uccide. Freud continua la cura di Cecily e a poco a poco, aiutato anche da una lucida analisi di se stesso, scopre che anche in lei il fattore sesuale anormale è causa della sua nevrosi, che guarisce non appena la paziente si rende conto di questo fatto. Ma quando Freud espone la sua teoria, tutti i medici viennesi gridano allo scandalo. Anche Breuer, pur stimandolo per la sua serietà scientifica, manifesta la sua opposizione. freud dovrà continuare la sua lotta da solo.
