Trama:
Proof - La prova, film diretto da John Madden, segue la storia di Catherine (Gwyneth Paltrow), figlia di un famoso matematico dal quale ha ereditato il dono del calcolo. Suo padre Robert (Anthony Hopkins), professore universitario, ha elaborato alcune tra le teorie più innovative al mondo. In seguito a gravi problemi psichici, insorti con l’età, l’uomo ha dovuto cedere alle cure di sua figlia nell’ultimo periodo della sua esistenza. Quando muore, Catherine prende il suo posto e, se da un lato riconosce di somigliare al padre per il talento matematico, dall’altro teme di aver ripreso da lui anche la malattia mentale.
Comincia così a entrare in confusione, dubitando di se stessa e finendo per isolarsi e lasciare l’università. In suo soccorso arriva la sorella Claire (Hope Davis) che vuole portarla a New York per farla visitare da uno specialista. Tutto precipita quando Catherine fa vedere ad Hal (Jake Gyllenhaal), ex-studente di suo padre, un quaderno con la dimostrazione di un teorema sui numeri primi che lei sostiene essere sua. Nessuno le crede e la teoria viene attribuita a suo padre. Per fortuna l’unico che ancora crede in lei, Hal, decide di riesaminare tutti i relativi documenti: riuscirà a dimostrare che Catherine ha ragione?
