Trama:
Sul finire degli anni sessanta dell'Ottocento la famigerata banda dei fratelli James imperversava nello stato del Missouri, assalendo banche, treni e diligenze. Gli ultimi ribelli della guerra civile erano al servizio del più carismatico dei fratelli James, Jesse, bandito professionista dal grilletto facile, lo sguardo glaciale e i modi affabili. Figlio di un pastore e ultimo dei tre fratelli James è venerato e invidiato dal più piccolo dei cinque Ford, frustrato per il credito minore ricevuto in seno alla banda. Robert, poco più che ventenne, spera di farsi apprezzare e reclutare dal carismatico leader. L'ostinata diffidenza di James per Robert trasformerà l'ammirazione in disprezzo. Il biasimo di Bob e un colpo di pistola fredderanno Jesse James a tradimento. Era il tre aprile 1882. Era l'inizio della leggenda del "bandito sociale".
