Trama:
Nei laboratori di un'azienda farmaceutica di San Francisco, il giovane ricercatore Will Rodman sperimenta su degli scimpanzé gli effetti di un virus in grado di potenziare i ricettori neuronali e di fornire una possibile cura per l'Alzheimer. Una di queste cavie mostra lo sviluppo di un'intelligenza superiore alla media, ma viene abbattuta assieme alle altre dichiarando fallito l'esperimento quando risponde con aggressività ai tentativi dei medici di sottoporla a nuovi test. Lascia tuttavia nei laboratori un piccolo cucciolo, che Will decide di risparmiare alla soppressione e di accogliere in casa propria. Il tempo passa e dopo qualche anno lo scimpanzé, soprannominato Cesare, dimostra delle straordinarie capacità cognitive, imparando in fretta il linguaggio dei segni e raddoppiando il proprio quoziente intellettivo anno dopo anno. Ma con il suo cervello, cresce anche il bisogno di relazionarsi con un ambiente libero e con una specie all'altezza che non lo tratti da bestia o da mostro.
