Matinèe era lo spettacolo proiettato nei cinema al mattino o nel primo pomeriggio prefestivo, quando c’era poco pubblico, la nicchia degli appassionati ed i ragazzi che saltavano la scuola. Per quel pubblico si proiettavano visioni d’essai o anteprime di pellicole a basso costo, ma originali. La macchina del tempo di Joe Dante riporta a quegli anni 60 del cinema e dell’America davanti a Cuba, ne ricostruisce nitidamente la scenografia e le abitudini, i caratteri ed i colori. Mette al centro del film i ragazzini che non capiscono ancora la paura dei loro genitori, che anzi con la paura si divertono andando a far la coda al grande evento della matinèe: il film col mostro in Romborama. A quel film in B/N, dentro al film a colori, assisteremo anche noi, ridendo come tutti i ragazzini impegnati nella guerra di pop-corn, fino al finale spettacolare e sorprendente, che buchera’ lo schermo con la realta’. Un film in Atom-vision per spaventarsi ridendo e dimenticare le paure della realta’ atomica. Il film e’ un omaggio a William Castle, regista eclettico, che aveva portato gli effetti meccani ed elettrici fuori dallo schermo, seminando la paura direttamente tra gli spettatori con le poltrone vibranti. Il suo impedibile, delirante The Tingle (1959, rititolato in Italia “Il mostro di sangue”) e’ il film che ispira Joe Dante e merita assolutamente una visione prima di questa divertente e bellissima Matinèe.
